What Is General Dentistry?
General dentistry offers the foundation of your oral healthcare. From comprehensive oral exams and routine dental cleanings to an array of general dental procedures, Dr. Lane is able to diagnose, treat, and handle all your dental needs. Complex dental procedures can be discovered with general dentistry and treated accordingly.
Benefits of General Dentistry
General dentistry helps to maintain oral health. And sometimes that involves patient education. By taking the time to discuss proper methods of caring for teeth with patients, we are able to help prevent major dental issues and keep teeth and gums healthy for years to come.
A few other benefits of general dentistry include:
- Examine all areas of your mouth to look for signs of bacteria. Areas of concern can be addressed before they have a chance to get worse.
- Routine cleanings reduce staining and chance of infections.
- Monitor for cavities, signs of gingivitis and even signs of cancer.
- Restore teeth that have cavities, have been broken or cracked, and those that have been worn down due to grinding.
Perhaps the biggest benefit of general dentistry is being healthy. Regular visits to your dentist can reduce your chance of things like stroke and heart disease. After all, good oral health means good overall health.

Procedures Offered
At Lane Family Dentistry we offer the following general dentistry procedures:
- Comprehensive oral examination – A comprehensive oral exam is a thorough visual review of the mouth, head, and neck that helps identify any signs of concern. Low-radiation digital imaging gives our team a clearer, more complete picture, making it easier to spot cavities, issues with existing dental work, gum and bone recession, and other conditions affecting the mouth, head, and neck.
- Routine cleanings – A professional dental cleaning, also called oral prophylaxis, removes plaque and tartar buildup that regular brushing and flossing can miss. Our team uses gentle, specialized instruments designed to clean the teeth thoroughly without causing any damage. An ultrasonic device with water cooling loosens heavier tartar deposits first, then finer hand instruments smooth the tooth surfaces and remove smaller buildup. The appointment finishes with a thorough polishing for a clean, fresh result.
- Fillings – Composite fillings use tooth-colored material to repair cavities while keeping your smile looking natural. After all decay is removed, the composite resin is placed into the prepared tooth and hardened using a specialized curing light. The entire procedure is typically completed in a single appointment, making composite fillings a fast and effective solution for treating tooth decay.
- Crowns – A crown is a dental restoration that fits completely over a tooth that is cracked, broken, worn down, or severely decayed. Most dental crowns are completed over two appointments. At the first visit, the tooth is shaped and an impression is taken, and a temporary crown is placed to protect it. At the second visit, the custom permanent crown is checked for fit and cemented securely in place.
- Root canal treatment – Root canal therapy is most often needed when decay has reached the nerve of a tooth or an infection has developed. During treatment, the infected or inflamed pulp tissue is removed from inside the tooth. The chamber is then carefully cleaned and disinfected before being filled and sealed to prevent re-infection. Once the root canal is complete, the tooth is restored with a crown or filling to bring it back to full function.
- Extractions – When a tooth cannot be saved through restorative care, removal may be the best path forward. The area is numbed with local anesthesia before the procedure begins. The tooth is then gently worked loose from the surrounding bone, ligaments, and tissues using a controlled rocking motion and carefully lifted out. Stitches may be needed following the extraction to help the site heal properly.
- Scaling and root planing – Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical treatment used to manage gum disease. During the scaling phase, specialized instruments are used to clean plaque and tartar from beneath the gumline. Root planing then follows, smoothing the surfaces of the tooth roots so the gum tissue can heal and reattach more effectively. Together, these steps help restore a healthier, cleaner foundation for your teeth.
- Custom mouth guards – Sports participation at any level puts teeth and jaws at risk. A mouth guard creates a protective barrier over the gums and teeth, helping shield the lips, gums, arches, and jaw during practice and competition. This is especially important in contact sports, where the chance of impact is high. A properly fitted custom guard significantly lowers the risk of serious dental injuries.

When the bad bacteria in your mouth outweigh the good, they can attach themselves to your teeth and begin to grow. As the saliva mixes with the bacteria, a sticky substance known as plaque will form. And, if not removed, this is what causes cavities.
Ideally, you should have your teeth cleaned every six months, including a comprehensive examination. However, you should – at the very least – visit the dentist for this routine procedure annually.
