Habit Appliance

Habit appliances are designed to discourage thumb or finger sucking and to help correct improper tongue positioning or swallowing patterns. In some cases, these appliances are recommended to reduce the potential impact these habits can have on tooth alignment and development. They are typically secured to the back molars and remain in place rather than being removable.

Space Maintenance

Space maintainers help preserve the proper spacing in a child’s mouth after the early loss of baby teeth. Since primary teeth guide the eruption of permanent teeth, maintaining that space is important for proper alignment. These appliances are commonly made from stainless steel and/or plastic and may be either fixed or removable, depending on the patient’s needs.

Distalizer / Molar Rotation

A distalizer is used to reposition molars before comprehensive orthodontic treatment begins. By properly aligning these teeth early on, this approach can make future orthodontic care more efficient and may help reduce overall treatment time.

Herbst Device

The Herbst appliance is often used alongside braces to correct an overbite, which is frequently related to the positioning of the lower jaw. Most commonly recommended for patients between the ages of 10 and 13, this appliance takes advantage of natural growth to guide jaw development. It is attached to both the upper and lower molars, gradually encouraging the lower jaw into a more optimal position before progressing to the next phase of treatment.
