Habit Appliance

Habit appliances are designed to help patients overcome thumb or finger sucking and to correct improper tongue positioning or swallowing patterns. When these habits persist, they can cause changes in tooth alignment and jaw development. In most cases, habit appliances are banded to the back molars and are not removable.

Space Maintenance

A space maintainer holds open the gap left by a prematurely lost baby tooth, preventing neighboring teeth from drifting into the space. Since primary teeth guide permanent teeth into their correct positions, maintaining proper spacing is key to healthy development. Space maintainers are typically made from stainless steel, plastic, or a combination of both and may be fixed or removable.

Distalizer / Molar Rotation

A distalizer is used to reposition molars before full orthodontic treatment begins. By addressing molar positioning early, this approach helps streamline the bracket phase and can shorten the overall treatment time.

Herbst Device

The Herbst appliance works alongside braces to correct an overbite, which is often caused by the positioning or size of the lower jaw. Most commonly used in patients aged 10 to 13, it takes advantage of the natural growth period to help guide jaw development. The device is cemented to the upper and lower first molars on each side and works gradually to shift the lower jaw into a better position before the next stage of orthodontic treatment begins.
