Are Veneers Permanent?

Are Veneers Permanent?

Team Dental Veneers

If you’re looking for a solution to stained, chipped, gapped teeth, or misaligned teeth, veneers are a terrific option. But while you may already know how attractive and easy to apply veneers can be, you may be wondering whether or not they’re a permanent solution.

Simply put, while not considered permanent, veneers can last a long time just by practicing  simple, good oral hygiene. And they’re a wonderful way to make your smile look its very best.

What is a Veneer?

Dental veneers are made from thin, stain-resistant porcelain or composite dental resin. Veneers are cemented on the front surface of teeth, improving the appearance of your teeth cosmetically as well as restoratively. They are to place on your teeth, too.

As a first step, your dentist will make an impression of your teeth, creating a model for the veneer. Second: your dental team will examine a tooth color guide to choose the most natural color match for your veneers with your teeth. The veneers themselves will be created in a dental lab and then, once received, your dentist will cement them onto your teeth.

While you cannot remove veneers again, they are simple to replace when they wear out.

What are Veneers Used For?

Veneers can be applied to one or several teeth to:

  • Correct gaps between the teeth
  • Correct uneven lengths
  • Correct slightly misaligned teeth
  • Correct discoloration
  • Restore chipped teeth
  • Correct teeth that are slightly crooked
  • Change the size or shape

Veneers cover the front of the tooth surface and slightly wrap around the sides and biting edge of the tooth.

How Long Veneers Do Last?

Long lasting, but not permanent, veneers typically last between 10 to 15 years. But how long they last depends on both which type of veneer you choose and your own oral care. Both can help with extending the life of your veneers.

They offer a long term benefit that enhances your appearance and your overall dental health, and are a simple way to achieve the most attractive smile.

Regular Dental Care Extends Veneer Life

The most important thing you can do to extend the life of your veneers is to care for them like your natural teeth, brushing and flossing twice daily, and scheduling regular six-month appointments with your skilled dentist for important check-ups and routine cleaning.

Maintain Good Oral Health

Maintaining good oral health will also preserve your veneers’ longevity. That includes avoiding things that can be rough on all your teeth, like high-sugar foods such as sodas or hard candy, chewing on ice or on your fingernails, or using your teeth to open envelopes or a package.

One thing to remember: porcelain veneers are fairly stain-resistant, but composites react just like your natural teeth do to substances. This means they can be stained from the various foods and beverages, which makes it  a good idea to limit the consumption of some beverages like coffee, tea, and red wine, as well as limiting the consumption of some berries.

One more important thing you can do to preserve veneer life: avoid teeth grinding. If that is a habit, your dentist can fit you with a comfortable mouthguard, which will help you avoid grinding and prevent cracks or chips as well as TMJ symptoms.
